Candles have long held a place of significance in human history, providing warmth, light, and ambiance. However, the candles we usually find on store shelves might not be as innocent as they seem. Traditional candles, often made from paraffin wax, are widely used but have hidden downsides that affect our health and the environment. In this blog-post, we’ll delve into reasons why paraffin wax candles can be detrimental and explore more eco-friendly alternatives offered by us here at Cosmé.

Composition of Paraffin Wax Candles:

Paraffin wax, derived from petroleum, is the most common ingredient in traditional candles. When these candles are burned, they release harmful chemicals into the air, including toluene and benzene, both of which are known carcinogens. These chemicals can lead to various health issues when inhaled regularly, such as respiratory problems, allergies, and even contribute to more severe conditions like asthma.

Air Quality and Indoor Pollution:

Burning paraffin wax candles indoors can significantly impact air quality. The smoke and soot generated by these candles contain fine particulate matter that can penetrate deep into the lungs, which leads to respiratory irritation and aggravation of existing conditions. Additionally, the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can contribute to indoor air pollution, affecting the quality of the air we breathe.

Environmental Impact of Paraffin Wax:

The environmental consequences of paraffin wax candles are also concerning. Paraffin is a non-renewable resource that is obtained through refining crude oil. This extraction process contributes to carbon emissions and climate change, and depletes valuable fossil fuel resources. Moreover, the production of paraffin wax also involves chemical treatments, which can further harm ecosystems and water sources.

The Need for Sustainable Alternatives:

Thankfully, there are better options for those who enjoy the soothing glow of candles. Some alternatives include:

  • Soy Wax Candles: Made from soybean oil, these candles are renewable, biodegradable, and produce less soot and pollutants when burned. Organic soy wax, which comes without harmful pesticide by-products, is an even better alternative.
  • Beeswax Candles: Beeswax is a natural by-product of honey production. These candles burn cleanly, emit a subtle honey scent, and do not release harmful chemicals.
  • Coconut Wax Candles: Derived from coconuts, this wax is eco-friendly and sustainable, making it a viable option for conscious consumers.
  • Plant-based and Essential Oil Candles: These candles are often made from a combination of renewable plant waxes and scented with natural essential oils, ensuring a safer and more eco-conscious choice.

WORDS AND PHRASES TO WATCH OUT FOR ON CANDLE LABELS:

We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but many of your favorite candle companies are not being completely transparent with you. Many candle companies use paraffin wax because it is inexpensive, long burning, and retains scent and color well.

If a candle is free of paraffin wax, companies should be clear with labeling. Watch out for some of their deceptive labeling tactics:

  • If the label or website does not list the wax type: the wax type is most likely paraffin.
  • Paraffin wax: believe them, it is paraffin wax, no matter what other trendy words they throw on the labels.
  • Paraffin wax blend: it is most likely mainly paraffin wax with a bit of natural wax (such as coconut, apricot, soy, or beeswax).
  • Soy wax blend/ coconut wax blend/ beeswax blend/ apricot wax blend: usually, if there is one type of wax, the candle maker does not need to use the word “blend,” especially if they list the other ingredients.
  • Para soy wax: again, if it is simply soy wax, then there should be no need for the word “para.” “Para” is most likely short for “paraffin.”

Conclusion:

While the allure of paraffin candles is hard to deny, their potential harm to our health and environment cannot be overlooked. The release of toxic chemicals and the negative impact on indoor air quality make them a less than ideal choice.
